We deliver a broad and balanced curriculum, with an emphasis on children taking responsibility for their own learning. In different subjects, children are encouraged to choose their own challenge which will help them work in their stretch zone, rather than adults assuming they know the children’s level of understanding.
Feedback and marking focuses on the next steps children need to take in their learning. From a very young age, our pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own learning and that of their peers—purple pens are used regularly in all classrooms to encourage children to show where they have improved their work.
We encourage a creative approach to teaching and children use IT extensively in their learning. The skills of different subjects are taught through one topic: for example learning about World War II combines geography, history, art and IT skills. This makes the learning experience much richer for children.
We are very proud of the enrichment we offer through trips and extra curricular activities through the year. We have a wide range of clubs from sporting leagues to cooking, art to games club.
Our fortnightly newsletter, which is emailed to all parents and available on our website, shows the fantastic learning that takes place on a day to day basis.
At Burley and Woodhead Primary we approach teaching and learning with a Growth Mindset. We aim to empower children by teaching them about the process of learning and how this is not always easy or straight forward. By giving children focused praise and constructive feedback, we help them to become resilient lifelong learners who relish a challenge and share in each other’s successes.
